Russian Ambassador's Challenge Trophy Chess Championship was held in Colombo

On February 25, 2011 in the premises of the Russian Cultural Centre in Colombo the award ceremony for the winners of the 1st islandwide Russian Ambassador's Challenge Trophy Chess Championship (February 11-13) took place. In the chess tournament that was organized by the Russian Embassy along with the Russian Cultural Centre and its' Anatoly Karpov Chess Club, 35 teams with more than 500 chess-players from different provinces of the country took part. The Sri Lanka Navy team emerged champions. Vice-Admiral of the Sri Lanka Navy R.S.Wijeigunarathne, members of the administration of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, representatives of various chess clubs came to welcome their chess teams. Speaking at the ceremony H.E. Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka Mr. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov noted achievements of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club of the Russian Cultural Centre and in particular its President Mrs.S.Wijesuriya, world championess and ten-fold championess of Sri Lanka as well as pointed out the importance of the development of the bilateral ties between Russia and Sri Lanka in the sphere of sports.
