RUSSIAN CULTURE IN COLOMBO

On April 22, 2010 at the "Galle Face" Hotel, Colombo, for the first time in many years a really high level Russian event of great cultural and spiritual importance was held. It was prepared in cooperation by the Club of Russian Senators, the Russian Club of Orthodox Maecenas, the Charity Fund of Miss Universe-2002 Oksana Fedorova and the Embassy of the Russian Federation with its Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka. It included the launching of the movie "Rama's Bridge", the opening of the exhibition "Measured Icon: History and modernity" and performance by Russian musicians and a singer.

The research-documentary movie "Rama's Bridge" by the Russian film-maker Alexander Volkov illustrated the story about the legendary Bridge between Sri Lanka and India built according to the "Ramayana" story at the request of Prince Rama by his Vanara army to recover his wife Sita, who had been kidnapped by king Ravana. The film became a brilliant research of connections between the island and the continent, the past and the present, the legend and the reality.

The exhibitions presented measured Icons, which were popular in Russia centuries ago. These special icons were gifted to the baby when he or she was baptized. The personal icon was made according to the special measures: height and the width of the icon precisely corresponded to the height of the baby and the width of his or her shoulders in the moment when the baby was born. Those icons were meant to protect its owner during his whole life. The exhibition combined antique icons presented by the Russian Club of Orthodox Maecenas and the "House of Icons at Spiridonovka" (Moscow) with modern Russian icons created in accordance with old traditions of Byzantine and Russian schools.
