RUSSIAN CULTURE IN COLOMBO
On April 22, 2010 at the "Galle Face" Hotel, Colombo, for the first time in many years a really high level
Russian event of great cultural and spiritual importance was held. It was prepared in cooperation by the Club of
Russian Senators, the Russian Club of Orthodox Maecenas, the Charity Fund of Miss Universe-2002 Oksana Fedorova and the
Embassy of the Russian Federation with its Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka. It included the launching of the movie
"Rama's Bridge", the opening of the exhibition "Measured Icon: History and modernity" and
performance by Russian musicians and a singer.
The research-documentary movie "Rama's Bridge" by the Russian film-maker Alexander Volkov illustrated
the story about the legendary Bridge between Sri Lanka and India built according to the "Ramayana" story at
the request of Prince Rama by his Vanara army to recover his wife Sita, who had been kidnapped by king Ravana. The film
became a brilliant research of connections between the island and the continent, the past and the present, the legend
and the reality.
The exhibitions presented measured Icons, which were popular in Russia centuries ago. These special icons were
gifted to the baby when he or she was baptized. The personal icon was made according to the special measures: height
and the width of the icon precisely corresponded to the height of the baby and the width of his or her shoulders in the
moment when the baby was born. Those icons were meant to protect its owner during his whole life. The exhibition
combined antique icons presented by the Russian Club of Orthodox Maecenas and the "House of Icons at
Spiridonovka" (Moscow) with modern Russian icons created in accordance with old traditions of Byzantine and
The Russian Delegation for this event was composed of distinguished figures of Russian political, cultural and
business circles. The Sri Lankan Side was represented by many parliamentarians including Prof. G.L.Peiris, Hon. Susil
Premajayantha, son of the President N.Rajapaksa and other eminent representatives from the political, public, religious
and business circles.
In conclusion, there was an award presentation, when Ambassador of the Russian Federation H.E. Mr. Vladimir
P.Mikhaylov and prominent Russian businessman Mr. S.N.Golovin were decorated with the Order "For Good Deeds",
medal "For the multiplication of good deeds" was awarded to the Director of the Russian Cultural Centre in
Colombo Mr. Ayrat Akhmetov, International Secretary of the Sri Lanka – Russia Friendship Society Dr. Saman Weerasinghe
and Assistant President of the Society Ven Dr. Pallekande Rathnasara Maha Thero. Hon. Susil Premajayantha was presented
with token from the Senate of Russia.
The Greeting Messages were read out to the participants from the Chairman Of the Council of Federation of the
Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Hon. Mr. Sergey M.Mironov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian
Federation H.E. Mr. Sergey V.Lavrov.
The ceremony was presented by the Ambassador of the Good Will of UNICEF, "Miss UNIVERSE 2002" Oksana
Fedorova and Miss Sri Lanka 2008 Gaisha Perera. Famous Sri Lankan artists (dancers and musicians) also performed
