Sri Lanka celebrates double 50th anniversary of Yuri A.Gagarin flight to outer space and his visit to Ceylon

On April 21st, 2011, Russian Cosmonaut V.A.Lyakhov, double Hero of the Soviet Union, President of the Russia-Sri Lanka Friendship Society, H.E.Mr.VladimirP.Mikhaylov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka, Mr. A.A.Akhmetov, director of the Russian Culture Center in Colombo, Hon.Mr. S.Premajayantha, Minister of Petroleum Industries of Sri Lanka, President of the Sri Lanka - Russia Friendship Society, other distinguished statesmen and public figures of Sri Lanka, representatives of science and culture and a number of foreign ambassadors participated in the solemn meeting dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin space mission and the 50th Anniversary of his visit to Ceylon.

H.E. Ambassador of the Russian Federation Mr. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov noted universal importance of the first manned flight to outer space, Mr. V.A.Lyakhov shared his memories of YuriA.Gagarin, Hon. Minister S.Premajayantha stressed the warmth and strength of friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Russia.

A documentary movie about YuriA.Gagarin was screened to the public and a photo exhibition dedicated to the double anniversary was opened with recently unveiled in local archives photos of Yuri Gagarin and his spouse stay in Ceylon in 1961 along with the copies of that period newspapers.
