Ceremony to handover humanitarian demining equipment from the Russian Federation held in Colombo

On November 3, 2011 at the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development of Sri Lanka an official ceremony to handover the demining equipment consisting of 4 demining machines, 100 demining bullet-proof vests, 100 protective helmets and 100 metal detectors from the International Civil Defence Organization as a contribution from the Russian Federation was held.

The Russian side was represented by H.E. Mr. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka and Esteemed Mr. Vladimir Kuvshinov, Deputy Secretary General of International Civil Defence Organization; the Sri Lankan by Hon. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Hon. Karunatilaka Amunugama, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Sri Lankan Army and other high representatives of the Ministries and Armed Forces; from the ICDO Esteemed Mr. Andrey Kabanov, Deputy Director of "Emercom-Demining" was present.

During the ceremony H.E. Ambassador Mr. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov stressed that for the last years the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Sri Lanka had strengthened significantly and got qualitatively higher dimension. H.E.Ambassador noted that the ceremony was another friendly gesture as the practical contribution of the Russian Federation to solving all the post-conflict problems in Sri Lanka and achieving comprehensive national reconciliation and successful peaceful development.

Receiving the equipment the Sri Lankan Side expressed sincere gratitude to the Russian Federation.
