Ceremony of unveiling the founding stone of the new complex of the Russian Embassy took place in Colombo
On November 23, 2011 a ceremony of unveiling the founding stone of the new premises complex of the Embassy of the
Russian Federation in Sri Lanka took place in Colombo. The Russian Side was represented by Mr. Mikhail V. Vanin, Hon.
Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov,
Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka, Hon. Father Gennady, Archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church, Mr.
Konstantin Loshkarev, Director of the Construction and Property Abroad Department of the MFA of the Russian Federation.
From the Sri Lankan Side Hon. Prof. G.L.Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, Hon. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of
Petroleum Industries, Mr. A.J.M. Muzzammil, mayor of Colombo, and various representatives of the Sri Lankan authorities
were present and the Sri Lanka – Russia Society.
During the speeches H.E. Ambassador Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, Hon. Mr. Mikhail Vanin and Hon. Prof. G.L.Peiris
emphasized the considerable activization of the traditionally friendly relations between the Russian Federation and Sri
Lanka. It is symbolized by the beginning of the new complex of the Russian Embassy construction at the territory that
was bought by the USSR in 1986.
For the first time in history a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church arrived to Sri Lanka by an official
invitation to perform the religious service. Hon. Father Gennady, Archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church, sanctified
the territory of the new Russian Embassy and blessed its construction.
