Hon. Prof. G. L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs of Sri Lanka, hosted a farewell dinner for H.E. Mr. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka, at his official residence on July 25, 2012.
Hon. Prof. G.L.Peiris thanked H.E. Ambassador for the consistent goodwill and support of the Russian Federation at all times. In particular, Sri Lanka appreciated the strong support extended to it by the Government of Russia at the Human Rights Council in March this year, the Minister said.
Prof. Peiris observed that the relations between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation were entering a new phase: the political relations were as strong as they could be, and were being further strengthened in areas like trade, investment and tourism, which have all been identified as priorities.
The Minister referred to Sri Lanka’s positive discussions with the Russian company “Gazprom” with regard to extensive co-operation in the petroleum and gas sector, as well as co-operation which is envisaged in the fisheries and construction sectors. He commented on increased air connectivity between Moscow and Colombo as an impetus to tourism and the plans to open a branch of the Bank of Ceylon in Moscow. Prof. Peiris also reminded about the events connected with Yuri Gagarin and Anton Chekhov, organized by the Russian Embassy in recent years.
H.E. Mr. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov, in reply, paid tribute to Sri Lankans for their warmth and hospitality which he had experienced in abundance wherever he and his wife travelled in the country. He appreciated co-operation extended to him at all times by the government of Sri Lanka, and the Ministry of External Affairs.
