Russian Naval Ensign Anniversary was celebrated in Sri Lanka
On 20-22 December Russian Culture and Science Center and Military Attache of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka
organized a celebration of the Saint Andrews flag 315th Anniversary. Saint Andrews flagis the naval flag of
the Russian Federation and the ensign of the Russian Navy (since 1992). It was initially introduced to Russian navy
by Peter the Great in 1698.
The celebration was held on the Russian guided missile cruiser‘Moskva’ which arrived at the Colombo Port earlier on
a replenishment and goodwill visit. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Sri
Lanka and the Maldives Alexander A. Karchava,Navy Commander JayanthaPerera,ship’s Commanding Officer Captain Sergey I.
Tronevand military attaché Dmitry A. Mikhailovsky inaugurated the exhibition in the berth. It was dedicated to the
history of Russian Navy and its ensign, Saint Andrew’s flag and showed to the public photos as well as reproductions of
Russian seascape painters.
